Confused Has anyone experienced hair loss on 15mg Methotrexate. Is folic acid increased on this dose?

Hi

Hair thinning and hair loss is a relatively common side effect of methotrexate. If you use the search feature above you should be able to turn up lots of information on this. To get you going here's a recent link on this topic .

Folic acid can sometimes be increased but recent changes on the prescribing of this may affect your doctor's decision. Your rheumatology dept. should be able to advise so worth giving them a call.

Hope this helps,

Hi Mash- I had significant hair loss when I went back on MTX in October. It stopped in Jan. I don't know why it stopped but I'm glad. I now have a lot of inch long hair all over my head, so I'm going for a very layered cut this week. I really thought it was not going to stop and I would end up bald, but that doesn't really happen. I think it will just be a matter of adapting your style to finer hair. Good luck xx Ailsa

Hi, i am on 25mg mtx and folic now nearly a year and no hair loss just the normall when put a brush through, think i must be lucky so far, but if it happens then a good cut would be done with a very good hairdresser that understands dignity,i have long hair and very thick so not looking forward if it happens, good luck.

Hi,When I first started on MTX I had quite a lot of hair loss.My rheumy nurse told me to increase the Folic Acid from one a week to four a week.I now take MTX on a Sat. then one Folic Acid on Mon. Tues. Wed. and Thurs. The hair loss has stopped and my hair has grown back to it's usual thickness. Might be worth you asking your rheumy if you can increase the Folic. Brenda.x

BigGrin Many thanks to you all for your replies. I am presently on 12.5MX but dose was increased to 15mg a couple of months ago and have been too anxious about possible side effects to move up. I have no problems on 12.5 and feel well most of the time. My ESR went down last month and am hoping it will continue to decrease without increasing the MX.
